Tvilight creates safe city ambiance and improves sustainability in Dutch city Helmond

Dynamic intelligent illumination improves urban living, enhances safety and attractiveness of public spaces, and contributes to a more sustainable environment, as showcased in the new video released by Tvilight, market leader in intelligent street lighting solutions, and the Municipality of Helmond, the Netherlands.

“I don’t feel safe when it’s dark. I prefer that the street is well-illuminated, at least when I am there,” shares Britt van Asperdt, a young local citizen. Knowing that lighting is crucial for people’s perception of safety, the Municipality of Helmond turned to technology that allowed it to provide the residents with sufficient light levels while also preventing energy waste and light pollution. By adopting the sensor-based connected street lighting solution from Tvilight, the city now delivers the right amount of lighting when and where necessary.

Alfred Groote, Public Lighting Manager at the Municipality of Helmond: "Sustainability is important for us and that's why we’ve been looking for ways to save energy and reduce the CO2 footprint. Besides this, what we ultimately want is a livable and safe city for everyone. That's why public lighting is so important—because people enjoy living in the city only when they feel safe and comfortable."

Motion-sensing intelligent street lighting solution from Tvilight expands the potential of public lighting, allowing the city to revitalize its community using light, activate public spaces, and contribute to the creation of safe, walkable, and livable urban environment where everyone feels safe and comfortable even in the absence of daylight. Other important benefits of the Tvilight connected intelligent street lighting solution include energy savings, remote control of public lighting, and the system’s capacity to act as an open, flexible, and future-proof foundation for new Smart City developments.

Chintan Shah, CEO of Tvilight commented: “Helmond is a forward-looking visionary city with a pioneering view on smart lighting and its role in creating a smart and sustainable urban environment. We are proud to support them in achieving their sustainability goals while also helping to enhance the quality of life in the city through smart lighting.”

Since the first pilot installation in 2013, the municipality has rolled out the Tvilight solution at various locations throughout the city, in combination with a broad range of luminaire types. Tvilight’s connected intelligent lighting solution with integrated smart sensors has been installed in areas such as public roads, residential neighborhoods, pedestrian zones, parking lots, and bicycle paths, allowing for “light on demand” or dynamic light levels that reflect actual human presence and citizen needs.

The trick is to get the right amount of lighting instead of letting the lamps burn all night long. Tvilight helped us solve this problem.

Prior to installing the Tvilight motion-sensing light control system, the city has been struggling to match the illumination levels to the needs of the citizens. Alfred Groote: "The trick is to get the right amount of lighting instead of letting the lamps burn all night long. Tvilight helped us solve this problem. Thanks to CitySense, lamps brighten up when there is someone on the street. There is always enough light for everyone and it helps us save money, achieve our environmental goals and improve safety in the city."

Chintan Shah: “Our intelligent lighting solution creates a flexible digital infrastructure that will evolve together with the city’s needs and that allows Helmond to add new exciting applications in the future, such as sensors that can monitor noise, traffic or weather conditions and adjust the light accordingly based on analyzed data.” The integration of new additional applications via the Tvilight Open Application Programming Interface (Open API) will further leverage the value of the connected public lighting infrastructure in Helmond.

Tvilight is a European market leader specialized in sensors, wireless lighting controllers, and connected light management solutions for outdoor applications.
